Chris Cornwell

As a geologist, I have always had an interest in landscape and the natural world. Now retired and living in the splendor of North Wales,

I have the opportunity to paint its mountains, woodlands, and coastline. I challenge myself to try and capture its beauty, light and atmosphere.

Watercolour is my favourite medium. I love its free flowing quality and transparency. Maintaining control of a wash on damp paper knowing that I tread a fine line between triumph and disaster is exhilarating. More recently, I have been painting with acrylics and oils enjoying the challenge of different mediums.

This is my first exhibition at Oriel Ynys Mon but I also show my work at the Bay Tree Gallery at Valley, Llangollen Tourist Information Centre, The Royal Cambrian Academy Open and various art group Spring and Summer Exhibitions.

I showcase my work on www.facebook.com/BrynEurynArt and can be contacted by email at ccornwell299@gmail.com

Peter Thomas

It was about 1955, I was a young student at Ysgol Gerlan which is just above Bethesda, and a young teacher started her career.

She had painted a picture of Christ and hung it on the classroom wall.

I was in awe and mesmerized and would look at the painting through the window at playtime.

Early experiences influence us for life.

Philippa Jacobs

Philippa attended the Royal College of Art, London.

During the eighties and nineties, she had numerous shows in and around London and was a regular exhibitor at the Mall galleries, mainly the Royal Portrait Society, and the Royal Society of British Artists. She last exhibited her work in Oriel Môn in 2017 to resounding acclaim.

After twenty-five years living at North Stack, Holyhead Mountain, Philippa moved inland to a cottage above Dee Valley, Bala, where she now has her Pen y Braich studio.

Upcoming exhibitions to look out for in 2024 are at Oriel Mon, Canolfan Ucheldre, Dylan Thomas Festival, Caernarfon, Bangor & Blaenau Ffestiniog, Libraries, RCA Conwy and a forthcoming Autumn show at Oriel Brondanw.

John Arthur Jones

John Arthur Jones (6 November 1931) was brought up in a small holding farm during the Second World War, on Anglesey in North Wales. He developed a love of the countryside and seashore, and began drawing and painting rural scenes at an early age.

Since retirement John renewed his interest in painting and currently has a collection of paintings which are mostly oil and water colour landscapes. Over the years John’s work has been exhibited at various libraries and galleries in Northamptonshire, the Derngate Theatre Northampton, and in Daventry, Rugby, Corby and Warwick. Following his return to live in Anglesey, some of his work has been accepted at the Ucheldre Centre, Holyhead, the Canolfan Centre, Beaumaris, the Museum and Gallery in Bangor and at Oriel Môn in Llangefni

This exhibition and the accompanying book (on sale in the shop) showcases the Welsh landscape paintings of the artist. The exhibition displays a record of paintings from John’s beloved family home of the rugged and beautiful landscapes of Anglesey and North Wales, together with a few paintings from other parts of Wales too.

Three of the paintings in the book (‘Swtan’, ‘Dunes, Aberffraw’, and ‘Afon Menai’) are not in this exhibition as they are now part of the permanent collection of Oriel Môn, for which John is delighted, proud and very humbled. All the other works on display and in the book may be available for purchase - for more information ask the gallery staff or email paintingsjajones@gmail.com
